I moved to Israel in June of 2019 - and for the first six months that I lived here, all I did was paint, learn Hebrew, and do mini day-trips on my own while Ido was working.
We live in the Krayot, a suburb just north of the city of Haifa - and only an hour drive from the Sea of Galilee. The place where Jesus famously walked on water.
So, with the English-language tour book I brought to Israel, I planned a day trip for myself to multiple sites around this famous little lake: the ruins of Magdala (where Mary of Magdelene was from), the monastery on the Mount of Beatitudes, and the White Temple remains at the site of Capernaum.
It was the first of many trips to the Sea of Galilee (called "The Kinneret" here in Israel). Located in the cooler forested north, it's common for people to drive here from urban Tel Aviv or the dry deserts of the south for a weekend away.
While the beaches on the Mediterranean are full of dramatic colors - like the screaming bright-teal waves and piles of highlighter-pink bougainvillea bushes - there's a softness to the muted forest colors of this famous lake up north. Gentler colors that feel more familiar to me after growing up in the rainy cornfields of Ohio.
I remember one long day hike we had with friends in the north - a hike that ended at twilight on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. And I remember being surrounded by pine trees and watching the half-moon rise in the east over the far Jordanian shore.
